How Does The Thyroid Gland Work?

The thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland at the frontal base of the neck below the Adam’s apple. It is one of the most crucial glands in our body that produce, store, and release hormones essential for our metabolism, heart rate, body weight, muscle strength, body temperature, cholesterol levels, menstrual cycles in women, and many other critical functions. The pituitary gland in our brain monitors thyroid hormone production by releasing the Thyroid Stimulating Hormones(TSH).

The thyroid gland primarily absorbs Iodine from our food to produce two hormones: Triiodothyronine (T3) and Thyroxine (T4). These are the most important hormones that monitor the working speed and energy consumption of almost every cell in our body. In the heart and intestine, for example, T3 and T4 regulate the rate of our heartbeat and the speed of food processing, respectively. Consequently, any imbalance in the amount of T3 and T4 production directly affects the working of these organs.

What Is The Thyroid Disease?

Every individual body part requires a specific level of these hormones to evenly regulate the total energy. Any change in these hormone levels negatively impacts different organs and their functions.

Thyroid disease is the onset of an imbalance in the production of thyroid hormones caused due to various reasons. The imbalance can occur in two ways which also defines the two types of thyroid disease.

Thyroid disease is the onset of an imbalance in the production of thyroid hormones caused due to various reasons. The imbalance can occur in two ways which also defines the two types of thyroid disease.

Hyperthyroidism :

If the thyroid gland produces an excess of T3 and T4 hormones, the organs associated with them work abnormally fast. Considering the example mentioned above, it may increase your heart rate or burn more calories, leading to unwanted weight loss. This type of thyroid response is known as Hyperthyroidism. It can cause a variety of symptoms, which include:

Hypothyroidism :

If the thyroid gland produces fewer T3 and T4 hormones than required, the associated body parts also slow down their functions. These reduced hormone levels can lead to a reduced heart rate and a slower metabolism which causes weight gain. This thyroid response is known as hypothyroidism and can also cause a unique and often inverse set of symptoms which include:

What Are The Causes Of Thyroid Disease?

Health disorders that cause hormonal imbalances or autoimmune responses can lead to thyroid disease, for which you may have to seek personalized thyroid treatment in Pune. However, since the thyroid can respond in two abnormal ways, these underlying disorders typically trigger only one of its two types. Except for Postpartum Thyroiditis, which affects new mothers in the first year after childbirth and can develop either one or both of the thyroid conditions, following are some unique causes of each of these types:

Causes Of Hyperthyroidism:

Thyroiditis: It is an inflammatory condition that causes the thyroid gland to releases excess stored hormones, and it lasts for a few weeks.

Nodules: A single overactive thyroid nodule, a lump-like growth in the gland, can cause hyperthyroidism.

Excess of iodine: If one consumes too much iodine through their food or certain medications, the gland produces excess hormones to utilize that iodine.

Graves’ disease: Also known as diffuse toxic goiter, it makes the entire thyroid gland overactive and leads to excess hormone production.

Causes Of Hyperthyroidism:

Hashimoto’s thyroiditis: It is an autoimmune condition where the healthy thyroid cells are attacked and destroyed, drastically reducing hormone production.

Genetic Dysfunction: In some cases, a congenital dysfunction in the thyroid gland can cause it to produce fewer hormones.

Lack Of Iodine: If our iodine intake falls below the necessary level, the thyroid gland isn’t able to produce enough hormones.

How is Thyroid Treated?

There are several blood tests that are needed to diagnose distinct causes of thyroid disease. Imaging techniques may also be used to detect minor changes in the thyroid glands.

If you’re diagnosed with hyperthyroidism, your initial treatment course may include medications such as radioactive iodine, beta-blockers, and anti-thyroid drugs.

In hypothyroidism, you may be prescribed thyroid replacement medications like levothyroxine which are synthetic thyroid hormones that balance the hormone levels in your body.

In severe cases where the thyroid nodules become enlarged or develop into thyroid cancer, you may have to under thyroid surgery in Pune to partially or entirely remove the affected gland tissues. This surgery, commonly known as thyroidectomy, can be performed in the following ways:

Traditional thyroidectomy: Here, a long incision is made along the neck, preferably in the skin creases where it would be less visible.

Endoscopic thyroidectomy: Here, the surgeon uses minimally invasive tools with a camera inserted through tiny hole incisions either around the neck or through the armpit.

Transoral thyroidectomy: Here, the surgeon makes an incision from inside the mouth to access the thyroid
