Gynaecomastia In Men is Not that Uncommon!
Well yes, it is not that uncommon, more than 1 million men in India complaint about “man boobs” every year. Gynaecomastia in men is a condition of over-developed or enlarged breasts that can occur at any age. The condition can be the result of hormonal changes, obesity, heredity, or the use of certain drugs. Gynaecomastia in men can cause emotional discomfort and impair your self-confidence.
In certain cases, men have known to even avoid certain physical activities and intimacy simply to hide their condition. It is actually quite a common disorder and it is basically the development of female-like breasts in a male patient. The disorder itself is distressing and that is why many patients come to plastic surgeons for correction of Gynaecomastia.
There are multiple causes of Gynaecomastia in men, it may be physiological or developmental commonly seen during infancy, the adolescent age group and then in the old age as well.
It is mainly due to the following reasons:
- Sometimes excess breast skin
- Excess localized fat
- Excess glandular tissue development
- Presence unilaterally (one breast) or bilaterally (both breasts)
There are some negative health effects which might be linked to Gynaecomastia in men, such as:
- Chronic kidney disease
- Certain liver diseases
- Hormonal imbalances (hormonal imbalances like a decrease in the testosterone levels and increase in the female hormones)
Now, there are some drugs which lead to Gynaecomastia in men. The most commonly seen nowadays is the use of steroids for bodybuilding purposes, There are various other drugs like diuretics, antibiotics, and antacids which cause Gynaecomastia in men.
There need not be an investigation to diagnose, as it is easily recognized. The most important investigation in Gynaecomastia is the physical examination and a detailed history, depending on that the doctor may advise you to undergo few other tests, these are blood tests which might involve a hormonal profile which also includes checking your thyroid levels, the male hormone testosterone levels and female hormones yeast Verizon levels. Apart from that, not many tests are required.
The treatment of Gynaecomastia in a released stage is just conservative, so if the duration is less than 2 years, it can go off on its own especially in the adolescent age group. To those entering into teenage, it does settle on its own too. However, if the duration is more than 2 years, then you do require surgical corrections in these cases.
Most of the cases which are small to medium sized breasts are generally treated with liposuction. Liposuction is a technology in which you inject some fluid into the tissue which is to be removed and then you break the Skepta using a cannula to suck out the fat. This is how you get a reduction in the size of the breasts and the skin over it also contracts over a period of time.
However, in some cases where men have really large sized breasts, they might require removal of the breasts which involves a bigger scar and mastocytoma for removal of the entire breast. Recovery from liposuction (from Gynecomastia) is not a tedious recovery, as it is a small procedure. So, the patients can be discharged on the 2nd day itself and only in some cases they might have to wear a pressure garment for 6 weeks and they can start working in about 4-5 days post the treatment.
